Join us at the Durban Botanic Gardens for a magical, botanical outdoor trail of lights celebrating Christmas.

Follow the trail along the Garden’s paths through the trees and landscape which will be spectacularly lit and all aglow.

There’s something for everyone at this festive event, an illuminated trail that winds its way through Africa’s oldest surviving Botanic Garden providing a magical experience after dark and fun for all the family in a safe and secure environment.

The season of giving

Embracing the season of giving, the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust has included KZN based charities who will be involved in the event and raise funds for their causes by running the kids activity garden. The following charities will be participating in the 2017 Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights.

Santa’s Grotto Look out for Santa and his sleigh being led by the Husky’s. Photo opportunities available. Illuminated Trail of Lights Walk through the enchanting gardens lit by thousands of lights
Magical Christmas Characters Meet the Forest fairy, Santa’s elves, Mr Snowman and many more
Carols by Candlelight enjoy the sounds of Christmas by the Umlazi Children’s gospel choir. On daily from 19h30-20h00
Tree of Light – sponsor a light on the tree in remembrance of loved ones that you have lost
Food Garden – local artisan food vendors, something for everyone
Talking Tree – meet the infamous Durban Botanic Gardens Talking Tree. He has a special message just for you
Northpole Mailbox – write and post your letters to Santa
Kid’s Activities– cupcake decorating, face painting, education stations, sand art, ceramic painting, pony rides, photo booth, kids dress up, soft play + more

The event runs from Sunday 17 December to Sunday 24 December from 18h30 until 21h30 daily.

Tickets are R40.00 per person. Children under 2 are Free.

May I use my tickets on any night of Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights?

No, please attend on the date you purchased the tickets for.
Why is there a limit on the number of people who can attend each night?

We’ve placed a limit on attendance each evening to provide a better experience for guests by preventing extremely large crowds on any given night.

Is there parking?

Yes, dedicated parking is available at the Umpafa grounds at the Visitors centre entrance. There is a surcharge applicable for parking.
Please note that parking is limited and fills quickly. If you park in the surrounding neighbourhood on a side street, please be respectful of our neighbours and park legally as Durban Botanic Gardens is not responsible for parking tickets.

What forms of payment will be accepted?

Cash, debit and credit cards are accepted for ticket sales. Cash only for certain stalls

Can I purchase food at Trail of Lights?

Yes, there will be a pop up food garden set up with local food vendors on site. We have a variety of stalls available. Unfortunately no picnic baskets, food or alcohol will be permitted onto the premises during the event. We do allow picnic blankets and chairs in the Lake area.

What kind of clothes should I wear?

Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Light is an outdoor event. Though the path is concrete, we suggest wearing shoes with good traction. Please come prepared for the weather conditions.

How long does it take to walk around the path?

It takes 20-¬30 minutes to walk the trail excluding all the activities on offer
Are pets allowed at the Durban Botanic Garden Trail of Lights?
Pets are not permitted at this event. Service dogs/animals are allowed.

Will Photography be allowed?

Durban Botanic Gardens welcomes photographers who capture and film their experience on cameras and smart phones for personal use and sharing via social media #trailoflights #givingback
