There’s something for everyone at this festive event, an illuminated trail that winds its way through Africa’s oldest surviving Botanic Garden providing a magical experience after dark and fun for all the family in a safe and secure environment.

The season of giving

Embracing the season of giving, the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust has included KZN based charities who will be involved in the event and raise funds for their causes by running the kids activity garden. All proceeds raised from these activation’s go  directly towards their worthy causes.

WHEN DOES THE 2019 DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS TRAIL OF LIGHTS TAKE PLACE

The Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights opens on the 12th December 2019 with a special VIP Preview night and continues on the 13th  December until the 30th December 2019. The event is closed on Christmas Day.

WHAT MAKES THE 2019 DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS TRAIL OF LIGHTS DIFFERENT TO THE PREVIOUS YEARS EVENT?

This year the event will be bigger and brighter than ever before. With an extended trail, new lighting displays and activation’s, a festive market, larger food garden, live music and  magical new look Santa’s grotto, we promise you are in for an absolute festive treat.

DO I NEED TO PURCHASE TICKETS IN ADVANCE?

The Trail of Lights has proven to be so popular in the past, that tickets were sold within days of release so we definitely recommend that you purchase tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Due to space limitations, we limit the number of attendees allowed on the trail per night. We strongly recommend that you purchase tickets in advance to be able to gain admittance to the event. We cannot guarantee admission to the event to anyone who has not purchased tickets in advance. Tickets sold at the door are limited and subject to availability.

MAY I USE MY TICKETS ON ANY NIGHT OF DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS TRAIL OF LIGHTS?

No, please attend on the date you purchased the tickets for.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS ON THE NIGHT I PURCHASED TICKETS FOR?

If there is very heavy rain and the event is OFFICIALLY cancelled, all ticket holders will be notified via sms as well as an announcement made on social media. Tickets purchased may then be rescheduled for use on any remaining event night. This only applies to event nights that have been OFFICIALLY cancelled by the event organizing team.

WHY IS THERE A LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO CAN ATTEND EACH NIGHT?

We’ve placed a limit on attendance each evening to provide a better experience for guests by preventing extremely large crowds on any given night.

IS THERE PARKING?

Yes, dedicated parking is available at the Umphafa grounds at the Visitors Centre entrance. There is a surcharge applicable for parking.

Please note that parking is limited and fills quickly. If you park in the surrounding neighbourhood on a side street, please be respectful of our neighbours and park legally as Durban Botanic Gardens is not responsible for parking tickets.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED?

Cash, debit and credit cards are accepted for ticket sales. Cash only for certain stalls. There will be an ATM on site.

CAN I PURCHASE FOOD AT TRAIL OF LIGHTS?

Yes, there will be a food garden set up with local food vendors on site. We have a variety of stalls available. Unfortunately no picnic baskets, food or alcohol will be permitted onto the premises during the event. We do allow picnic blankets in the Lake area.

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I WEAR?

Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Light is an outdoor event. Though the path is concrete, we suggest wearing shoes with good traction. Please come prepared for the weather conditions.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO WALK AROUND THE PATH?

It takes 60-90 minutes to walk the trail excluding all the activities on offer

IS THE TRAIL UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE?

Yes, the trail and surrounding event areas are wheelchair and pram accessible. Wheelchairs will be available for hire at the main event entrances however these are limited.

ARE PETS ALLOWED AT THE DURBAN BOTANIC GARDEN TRAIL OF LIGHTS?
Pets are not permitted Service dogs/animals are allowed.at this event.

WILL PHOTOGRAPHY BE ALLOWED?

Durban Botanic Gardens welcomes photographers who capture and film their experience on cameras and smart phones for personal use and sharing via social media #trailoflights#DBGTOL
